Oluwatoyin Tella

Tella’s work is both ancient and modern. An assemblage of the legacy and thread of her global Africaness.

Hip Hop is My Souls Motto

This body of work is centered on the pan-African origins, remembrances and Black empowerment lyrics in Hip Hop. This unapologetically Black origin (and surpressed continuation) tends to be shoved in the crevices of collective memory, to be forgotten. Since mainstream pop-cultures re-telling of the origins of the genre, this pro-Black aspect has been given very little attention.  Serving as an archivist, Tella chooses to highlight the powerful lyrics as well as the lyricist and use it as the title of her each piece in the series.

Ancient Now

Ancient Now is a series on the coming of a generational movement of the African master class. The neglected brilliance that will re-emerge. Masters of arts, science, culture and metaphysics put in the back burner only because of flight, fight or freeze.
